Overturned school bus at sunset on the interstate — bus towing recovery

BUS TOWING

School buses, transit buses, motor coaches — upright recovery and transport.

Buses

FOR SCHOOL DISTRICTS, TRANSIT, & TOUR FLEETS

A bus down on the road is a different kind of problem. There are passengers to consider, sometimes kids, and the rig is long, tall, and heavy. Our Peterbilt heavy rotator handles upright recovery and transport for school buses, transit buses, and motor coaches.

We work with school district transportation offices for fleet breakdowns, and we’ve pulled school buses upright off the shoulder of I-10 at sunset. Tour-coach operators call us for their Gulf Coast runs.

Passenger safety first: we coordinate with on-scene authorities before any recovery starts.

SCHOOL BUS & DISTRICT FLEET TOWING

A loaded school bus is a long, top-heavy, high-clearance vehicle, and when one goes down on a route through Crosby, Baytown, Highlands, or the greater Houston area, the district needs it cleared quickly and handled by people who do this for a living. We tow and recover Type A through Type D school buses (small cutaway buses through full-size conventional and transit-style rigs) and work directly with district transportation offices and shop foremen to get a disabled unit back to the bus barn or to a repair facility.

Districts run on schedules, so we keep it simple: a real dispatcher answers the call, we give a straight ETA, and we coordinate the recovery around the kids on board if students are still on the bus. We have run fleet and commercial work on Net-30 accounts since 2001, so a school district or transportation contractor can set up billing once and stop chasing paperwork on every breakdown.

TRANSIT BUS & PUBLIC FLEET RECOVERY

City transit and paratransit buses break down in live traffic, at park-and-rides, and in maintenance yards, and pulling one out of service the wrong way creates a second problem. We tow heavy transit buses across the Houston metro, clearing a stalled or wrecked unit out of a bus lane or off a busy corridor so the route keeps moving and the rest of the fleet is not backed up behind it.

For agencies and contractors running fixed-route or demand-response service, predictable response matters more than anything. We dispatch 24/7/365 from our Crosby yard, give the dispatcher a real arrival window, and bring the right wrecker for the weight the first time so there is no waiting on a second truck.

CHARTER MOTORCOACH & TOUR BUS TOWING

A 45-foot charter motorcoach loaded with passengers and luggage is one of the heaviest vehicles on the road, and a tour operator stranded on I-10, US-59, or the way to the coast cannot afford to sit. We handle full-size motorcoaches, double-axle highway coaches, and entertainer buses, transporting them damage-free to a repair shop while the operator arranges a relief coach for the passengers.

Coach operators care about their equipment. These are expensive, customer-facing vehicles, so we load and secure them on the correct heavy gear with attention to air-ride suspensions, low front clearances, and underbody storage bays. Gulf Coast tour and charter fleets have called us for exactly this kind of run, and we treat a coach like the rolling asset it is.

SHUTTLE, PARTY BUS & LIMO COACH

Not every bus is a 40,000-pound coach. Hotel and airport shuttles, employee shuttles, cutaway buses, party buses, and stretch limo coaches all sit between light-duty and full heavy-duty, and they each need the right equipment so the body, the wrap, and the interior come through clean. We size the wrecker to the unit instead of forcing a one-size hook on it.

Party-bus and shuttle operators usually break down at the worst time: Friday night, mid-event, with people on board. We answer 24/7/365 with a real dispatcher, coordinate getting the passengers handled, and get the vehicle off the road and on its way to your shop or storage.

ACCIDENT-SCENE & PASSENGER COORDINATION

A bus crash is a recovery, not just a tow. There may be passengers to account for, an investigating agency on scene, and a vehicle blocking a live lane. We work with on-scene law enforcement, fire, and EMS before any recovery starts, stage the equipment safely, and do not move the bus until the authorities clear us. Passenger safety comes first, every time.

Once the scene is released, we clear the roadway efficiently so traffic gets moving again, secure the bus, and transport it to the yard or to the location the fleet or insurer specifies. Wreck-damaged buses, units that took hits to the running gear, and buses that need to be loaded carefully for an investigation are all routine for us.

UPRIGHT & ROLLOVER RECOVERY

When a bus ends up on its side, slides down an embankment, or drops a wheel off a soft shoulder, a standard wheel-lift cannot touch it. That takes a rotator. Smith Towing runs a 35-ton heavy wrecker and 50- and 75-ton rotators that lift, rotate, and set a bus back on its wheels with a rigging plan matched to the angle, the weight, and the terrain so the recovery itself does not add to the damage.

High-clearance, high-center-of-gravity vehicles like buses and coaches demand the right pick points and the right tension, not brute force. Our operators have done this kind of upright recovery on the Houston-area interstates, and we bring the cable, the angles, and the anchor points to do it cleanly.

WINCH-OUT & OFF-ROAD BUS EXTRACTION

Buses get stuck too: a coach buried to the axles in a muddy event field, a school bus that dropped a rear wheel into a ditch on a rural Crosby road, a shuttle hung up on a soft shoulder after a hard Gulf Coast rain. We winch heavy buses out of mud, ditches, and embankments with enough recovery capacity to pull a loaded rig free without tearing up the driveline or the body.

Because we run heavy wreckers up to 50 tons, we have the reserve to handle a bus that is well and truly buried, not just one that needs a gentle tug. We read the situation, set the anchors, and pull it out the right way.

BUS TOWING ACROSS GREATER HOUSTON

We dispatch bus and motorcoach recovery 24/7/365 from our 4-acre Crosby facility and run the metro: I-10 through the Baytown and Katy stretches, US-59 / I-69, I-45, I-610, Beltway 8, and the SH-225 corridor. Response in Crosby typically runs about 15 minutes, and roughly 20 to 40 minutes across greater Houston depending on location and traffic. When you call, a real dispatcher (not a call center) gives you a straight ETA.

Smith Towing has served the Crosby and Houston area since 2001 out of our own secured yard, with an enclosed shop and overhead crane on site. That means a disabled bus has a real place to go, and a school district, transit agency, or charter operator has one heavy-duty number to call for the jobs smaller operators cannot handle.
