Buying a sneaker tow unit starts with the truck you plan to build and the vehicles you expect to move. The right choice needs to fit both, with an installation budget and service plan that make sense for your business.
Lil Hercules 2.0 is our featured pick for a Houston-area underbody build. We also compare the Lift & Tow Z-Series, Dynamic Stealth, and the bed-mounted Minute Man XD so you can see where each belongs on a buying shortlist.
Our connection to Lil Hercules: our new company, San Jacinto Wreckers, is an authorized distributor in the Houston area, offering sales and installation. That commercial relationship is part of why we are showcasing it. This guide compares published specifications and buying considerations; we have not conducted a controlled, head-to-head test of these units.

Sneaker tow units at a glance
Here, “sneaker” refers to a pickup wheel-lift setup, usually tucked underneath the truck. A bed-mounted unit is another way to build a pickup tow truck, but it uses space differently.
| Unit | Lift / tow (lb) |
|---|---|
| Lil Hercules 2.0 | 5,000 / 10,000 |
| Lift & Tow Z-Series | 4,000 / 8,000 |
| Dynamic Stealth | 5,000 / Confirm |
| Minute Man XD | 3,500 / 7,500 |
These are manufacturer equipment ratings. Your completed truck may have a lower usable capacity. Dynamic's current product page does not give a tow rating, so get that figure for the exact unit being quoted.
Why Lil Hercules 2.0 leads our list
The appeal is a substantial underbody lift with serviceable components and a local sales-and-installation option through San Jacinto Wreckers.
Detroit Wrecker lists a 5,000-pound lift rating and 10,000-pound tow rating, a five-inch-bore lift cylinder, and adjustable pivot pins at the crossbar and L-arms. Those are useful details to discuss when comparing the hardware behind a quote. Lil Hercules 2.0 product specifications.
For self-loading operation, ask for the Herc-O-Matic configuration, which uses powered jaws and six control functions. Detroit Wrecker also offers a standard L-arm version, so make sure the quote names the configuration you want. Lil Hercules configurations.
The manufacturer describes oil-impregnated bronze bushings at the pivot points and reinforced steel construction. We would make the maintenance schedule and access to replacement parts part of the buying conversation. A serviceable design is valuable when the person maintaining the truck knows what to inspect and where to get parts. Detroit Wrecker construction details.
Truck fit and warranty details
Detroit Wrecker requires frame reinforcement and a suitable rear-suspension setup. Its installation guidance specifies at least 10,000 pounds GVWR, excludes Ram/Dodge 2500 trucks with rear coil springs, and requires the underbody space occupied by a rear fuel tank to be available. Have the exact truck checked before buying the lift.
The advertised lifetime coverage applies to pins and bushings with proper maintenance. Ask for the written warranty covering the rest of the equipment and installation, too. Installation requirements and warranty conditions.
Lift & Tow Z-Series: worth comparing on upfront cost
The Z-Series offers hydraulic self-loading operation with six functions and a lift that retracts underneath the truck. Its published capacities are lower than Lil Hercules 2.0's, which makes your expected vehicle mix an important part of the decision.
Lift & Tow lists the unit at $11,995 before shipping and handling. Its optional installation selection adds $1,895, with pickup required; springs, reinforcement plates, and other accessories are separate selections. Treat that as a starting point for a complete quote. The manufacturer lists a one-year parts warranty. Z-Series specifications, options, and pricing.
Dynamic Stealth: another underbody option
Dynamic's current Stealth page lists a 5,000-pound self-loading wheel lift and 75 inches of reach, with dual rear wheels and frame reinforcement among its chassis recommendations.
Put it on the shortlist if you are comparing an underbody build on a dually. Request a written specification for the exact model, including its tow rating and capacity at the reach you expect to use. The public product page gives only part of the information needed for that decision. Dynamic Stealth specifications.
Minute Man XD: the bed-mounted alternative
The Minute Man XD deserves a look if a bed-mounted layout suits your truck. It attaches through the bed to the frame, so plan around the space the unit will occupy.
The manufacturer lists 3,500 pounds of lift capacity, 7,500 pounds of tow capacity, hydraulic self-loading, and a six-function wired control. It also identifies externally accessible hoses and head cylinders, which are worth looking at during a maintenance walkthrough.
The listed $15,900 price excludes freight and installation. The unit carries a one-year parts-and-labor warranty. Match the short- or long-bed version to the truck; Minute Man specifically excludes half-ton pickups. Minute Man XD specifications and fit guidance.
Compare the full installed price
Equipment price is only the start of a useful comparison. Ask each supplier to itemize the lift, installation, frame and suspension work, electrical and hydraulic equipment, lighting, securement gear, freight, and taxes. Include any dollies or other equipment your work requires.
For Lil Hercules 2.0 sales and installation through San Jacinto Wreckers, request an itemized quote for your truck and chosen configuration.
The competitor prices above were checked on September 19, 2026. Confirm current pricing, included equipment, and lead time in writing before ordering. A lower unit price can be useful, but compare complete quotes with the same scope.
What to check before choosing a unit
Start with the truck's limits. Installed equipment, passengers, fuel, tools, and carried load all count toward the finished vehicle's weight. Check the vehicle, axle, tire, and combined-weight limits with the installer. Ford's towing and payload guidance explains why payload, GVWR, axle ratings, and towing capacity are different measurements.
Ask for the rating at your working reach. A headline lift figure does not answer every loading question. Have the supplier document the limits that apply to your installation, including extension and load distribution.
Plan the layout before the work starts. Decide where dollies, straps, chains, tools, and hydraulic equipment will go. Check remaining bed space and access for routine service.
Get specific about support. Ask who handles warranty claims, which wear parts can be ordered, what maintenance records are required, and who will carry out repairs. Include operator familiarization and the inspection schedule in the handover discussion.
The best unit is the one your completed truck can use properly for the work you actually have. That is how we would narrow this shortlist before committing to a build.
